The Rock
My sister, step-mother and myself go shopping. When we walk up to the department store, we see a radio station van and giveaways are being handed out. My sister lives for these moments. So at her urging we head to the van. As we get there a man tells us to reach in a plastic canister where there are pieces of white paper and to pull one out. My sister goes first and gives a squeal.
"Free CD," the paper reads. He hands my sister a CD.
My step-mother goes next, reads her paper and promptly hands it to the man. She wins a tee-shirt.
When it's my turn, I reach into the canister and pull out my piece of paper. I glance at it and with a frown, I look up at the man while feeling my sister and step-mother looking at me expectantly.
"Mine's blank," I tell the man.
"Oh," he says. "You don't win anything."
"Hey, I live in this town and they're only visiting," I say indicating my sister and step-mother. "I'm a listener and support the station!" I continue indignantly.
"Sorry," the man says with a shrug.
"Great," I mutter as I walk off and head into the store.
"Karen always gets the rock," my sister explains to Jean, our step-mother, as they both follow me into the store.
Remember the Peanuts Halloween Special when the characters go trick-or-treating and Charlie Brown never gets candy, but instead, a rock?
Need I say more?
